Monkeys and Parkinson’s disease
Monkeys had their brains damaged by symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in tests funded by a charity.
The cure Parkinson’s Trust part-funded the experiments which were said to have caused the monkeys’ sufferings.
Marmosets were first plied with the toxic chemical MPTP to induce Parkinsons-like symptoms then given the drug L-Dopa to cause uncontrolled movement and psychosis.
Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid, said: ‘People do not want their money being used to fund disturbing experiments on animals.’
But University College London neurologist Prof Roger Lemon defended the tests, saying more than 250,000 people had been helped by similar research.

DIALOGUE
Two neighbours talk.
Liz: Hey, Sally, are you OK, dear? I just popped in to find out how you are doing… I heard about Molly yesterday. Well, poor thing… She was such a character, so funny… I loved her dearly; those eyes staring at you, asking to love her and give her a sausage… Oh my, she loved sausages.
Sally: I know, that’s my girl. I fed her well but she was really hooked on sausages.
Liz: I never told you this, I was afraid you would be angry with her; she had a secret way to my garden.
Sally: Did she? A way! Where was it?
Liz: You know the thick fence at the end of the garden?
Sally: Yeah, but it’s so dense!
Liz: Ha-ha, not for our crafty girl. She found a little space between two bushes and dug a hole under the fence. I myself discovered it only recently. Every time I saw her in the garden or at my door gently scratching and asking for sausages I was surprised. How, I wondered, had she got here? But it was without fail — when I fried sausages she was at my door. Yes, funnily enough we had something in common with your Molly.
Sally: Oh, Liz, are you making it all up?
Liz: No, not at all. What’s more she was a pushy girl. I’ll tell you a funny story; I was going to invite my students to celebrate the end of the academic year and end of exams. I was going to make toad in the hole. It’s not a complicated dish; you know I’m not a great cook. So, I had to fry a lot of sausages in advance. And I did it. My fridge was totally full so I put them in a saucepan and left it in the garden for the next day. All I had to do the next day was to make some salads and mashed potato. Half an hour before my guests’ arrival I rushed to the garden to fetch the sausages to warm them up. But what I discovered made me freeze! There was only one sausage left in the saucepan! Thanks Molly, it was very generous of you! I of course immediately guessed who had put me in this desperate position. I wonder whether she had indigestion after greedily gulping down all twenty sausages. At that time I didn’t know whether to burst out laughing or hang her — honestly I saw my dashed hopes in the saucepan.
Sally: Oh, I am really sorry! You never told me this story!
Liz: Well… what could you do anyway? Tell her off? Beat her? Put her in the corner? It’s just one of those things you can’t do anything about, but laugh. It’s the best way.
Sally: You’re right, you’re right, my dear… I didn’t know that she used to come to you… and now… where is she now? I am heartbroken…
Liz: Don’t worry Sally, I am sure she’ll be found. She is an adventurous girl in her quiet way Perhaps she’s on the run now exploring our neighbourhood? Perhaps she was a bit bored? You know what, I have an idea! Let’s fry sausages, lots of them. Dogs have an absolutely phenomenal sense of smell. Molly will be back to her favorite sausages quick as a flash.
Sally: Thanks Liz, actually it can work, brilliant idea! I’ll rush to the shop. How many of them do you think should I buy?
Liz: About five dozen will do. We’ll have a dog party. All the street dogs will be invited to enjoy sausages. Happy days!
