The Art of Forgetting

It’s amazing what we can remember and what we forget!

Six years after the death of Princess Diana, a famous magazine REPORTED that every one of the famous people they had asked could remember the exact DETAILS of how they FIRST heard the news of the princess’s death on August 31, 1997.

We remember such shocking and dramatic events BETTER than any others but why do we forget anything? The things we most often forget are names (of things as well as people), numbers, dates and things we DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

We also find it hard to remember anything when we ARE EMBARASSED, ill or very tired.

However, forgetting is perfectly normal. There is, it seems, a limit to what we can remember. If we could remember everything, all the time, life WOULD BECOME impossible! As we get older, we lose more and more of MEMORIES, leaving only the MOST IMPORTANT.
